ABSTRACT
This study focused on how students' performance in Chemistry in public secondary schools in the Oredo local government area was influenced by their learning environment. The purpose of this study was to determine how the learning environment affects students' performance in Chemistry. In order to complete the literature review, the researcher took the time to read books, journals, and other materials that related to the many headings. 80 pupils from four public secondary schools in the Oredo local government area of Edo state made up the study population for this investigation. Questionnaires were the instrument utilized to gather data for this investigation. The SPSS software was used to examine the data. The results show a strong correlation between the learning environment and Chemistry achievement.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Academic attainment is influenced by a variety of factors, including the learning environment, which includes the classrooms, libraries, technical workshops, laboratories, instructors' qualifications, school administration, instructional strategies, and peers (Ajayi, 2001 and Oluchukwu, 2000). Therefore, to improve students' performance in Chemistry, the learning environment continues to be a crucial area that should be researched and carefully maintained.
The government, parents, instructors, and even the kids themselves have expressed worry over the low Chemistry proficiency of Nigerian children. The coordination of the learning environment, which includes planning for instructional spaces, administrative spaces, circulation spaces, spaces for conveniences, and accessory planning, has a significant impact on the quality of education in addition to the teachers' performance in their duties (Ajao, 2001), In the teaching-learning process, both the teachers and the students are crucial. The location of a student inside the school's grounds, the design of their classroom, and the accessibility of instructional resources all affect how much their learning could be improved. A well-designed school is thought to set up educational results that will promote good social, political, and economic emancipation, an efficient teaching and learning process, and student proficiency in Chemistry.
Williams, Persaud, and Turner (2008) claim that safe and orderly classroom environments (a component of instructional space), school facilities (accessories), and international events are relevant to this study. Marsden (2005) reported that these factors were significantly related to students' performance in Chemistry in schools. The three researchers cited Glassman (1994), who claimed that, among other interventions, a warm and caring environment contributed to contribute to students' performance in Chemistry.
There are many ways in which the physical features of the school affect the teachers, students, and the educational process. Teaching and learning are made challenging by poor illumination, noise, excessive levels of carbon dioxide in classrooms, and fluctuating temperatures. Poor ventilation and upkeep result in ill health in both teachers and students, which lowers productivity and increases absenteeism rates (Frazier, 2002; Lyons, 2001; and Ostendorf, 2001). These elements may negatively impact student conduct, increase instructor annoyance, and impair students' learning attitudes. In addition to the direct effects that poor facilities have on students' ability to learn, the combination of poor facilities, which make the classroom uninviting and uncomfortable for teachers, and annoying student behavior, such as lack of focus and hyperactivity, lethargy, or apathy, creates a stressful work environment for teachers. It is probable that the aforementioned aspects of school infrastructure have an impact on kids' performance in Chemistry because stress and job unhappiness are frequent precursors to decreased instructor enthusiasm.
A lackluster learning environment, including issues with the student-teacher ratio, school location, student population, classroom ventilation, poor classroom lighting, and inconsistent classroom temperatures, has been linked to issues with student health, behavior, and academic achievement in previous studies (Moore, 2002). The goal of the current study is to evaluate how the aforementioned aspects of the learning environment affect students' performance in Nigerian schools as a complement to prior studies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
A student encounters numerous challenges while pursuing his studies. These issues have numerous facets. The study looks at how the learning environment affects students' academic performance in particular and explores potential solutions. The researcher, who views the study as inevitable, is undoubtedly quite concerned about the alarmingly bad performance in examination.
It is stated that due to environmental factors, secondary school student performance in private and public schools varies.
Instructional facilities with structural flaws, such as classrooms, libraries, technical workshops, and laboratories, may not ensure the high levels of Chemistry accomplishment of pupils. The effect of the learning environment on students' performance in Chemistry at junior high and high school in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, however, is not well understood.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The following are the objectives of the study:
1. determine the impact of classroom building on the performance in Chemistry of students in secondary schools in Edo State.
2. determine the impact of adequate class furniture on the performance in Chemistry of students in secondary schools in Edo State.
3. ascertain the impact of small class population on the performance in Chemistry of students in secondary schools in Edo State.
4. ascertain the impact of the use of instructional materials on the performance in Chemistry of students in secondary schools in Edo State.
1.4 Research Questions
The following questions are raised with regard to this research:
1. what is the impact of classroom building on the performance in Chemistry of students in secondary schools in Edo State?
2. what is the impact of the provision of adequate class furniture on the performance in Chemistry of students in secondary schools in Edo State?
3. what is the impact of small class population on the performance in Chemistry of students in secondary schools in Edo State?
4. what is the impact of the use of instructional materials on the performance in Chemistry of students in secondary schools in Edo State?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following are the research hypotheses:
1. there is no significant difference in the performances of students taught in classroom buildings and those in dilapidated buildings in Edo State.
2. There is no significant difference in the performances of students taught in class with adequate furniture and those without furniture in Edo State.
3. there is no significant difference in the performances of students taught in a small class population and those in a large class population in Edo State.
4. there is no significant difference in the performances of students taught using instructional materials and those taught without instructional materials in Edo State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is intended to inform parents, teachers, and school officials on a variety of factors that support kids in reaching their academic objectives. By doing this, they can look into the possibilities of incorporating those elements into their school, which might ultimately improve the academic results of their kids. Additionally, this survey has numerous similarities to many of its predecessors due to the fact that it is conducted in public schools.
This study serves as a useful resource for other schools to consider how the school environment affects students' performance in Chemistry in secondary school.
This study, a case study of selected secondary schools in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, may also help other researchers who are searching for more effective solutions to the issue of learning environments and students' performance in Chemistry in secondary school.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The scope of this work is to cover four selected schools under Oredo Local Government Area.
They are:
1. Awori College, Oredo
2. Ajangbadi High School, Ajangbadi
3. Edo model college, Oredo.
4. Oredo Community High School, Oredo
The subjects of this study are junior school.
It is hoped that the findings made in these areas would serve as a useful pointer to what occurs in other areas of the state and in other part of the federation knowing fully well that students encounter different environmental constraint.
